U.S. Strikes Iranian Oil Tankers, Drawing Threat of Reprisal

The U.S. military said it destroyed five Iranian oil tankers on Tuesday in response to the latest attacks on its warships and American targets in Jordan, the latest burst of back-and-forth strikes.

U.S. Central Command announced Tuesday that American forces destroyed five Iranian oil tankers after Tehran targeted a U.S. Navy warship with ballistic missiles. CBS News Pentagon reporter Eleanor Watson has the latest.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the United States would continue to target Iranian tankers in retaliatory strikes on Tuesday, as US authorities said five vessels had already been hit.

American forces were said to have hit multiple vessels in response to Iranian attempts to hit a U.S. warship.

They’re the latest tit-for-tat strikes as Washington and Tehran lurch back toward fighting during more than six months of war.
