Two ironies emerge out of Israel's deadlocked election

The president has a largely ceremonial role, except after elections when it is his responsibility to pick a candidate for prime minister.

With no clear winner, it will be up to Israeli President Isaac Herzog to decide whether any of the parties can form what he regards as a workable coalition.
