Supreme Court proposes no fuel for uninsured vehicles, seeks Centre's plan

The idea is one part of a broader package of road safety measures the court has put forward, which also includes tying automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras to vehicle and insurance records

The bench also extended the mandatory third-party motor insurance requirement for new vehicles to four years for cars and six years for two-wheelers.

The court said such a system would help identify uninsured and unregistered vehicles while encouraging owners to keep their insurance active.

The top court also ordered a technology-driven enforcement mechanism to automatically identify and penalise such vehicles without an insurance.
