The Mexican community of Cabo Corrientes faces the risk of a direct hit as the Category 4 storm churns off Jalisco.

Hurricane Simon strengthened into a powerful Category 4 storm and was expected to make landfall or skirt the coast of west-central Mexico on Sunday, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center.

The eye of Hurricane Simon was just off the Pacific coast of Mexico early Sunday and was expected to move inland later in the day as an extremely powerful storm.

Hurricane Simon ​strengthened into a powerful Category 4 storm off Mexico's Pacific coast on Saturday, threatening destructive winds, storm surges and potentially deadly flooding as it approaches landfall.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami said early Saturday Simon's maximum sustained winds increased to 145 mph (230 kph). A storm of that strength is considered a major hurricane.
