Colombian president says he asked Trump to suspend tariffs after earthquake

Abelardo de la Espriella, an ally of Trump, assumed office just days before the 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck

There has been no immediate response from President Donald Trump's administration to Abelardo de la Espriella's request for a suspension.

The Colombian President wrote on X that he made the request “to give some relief to our business owners, who are facing very difficult times due to the effects of the earthquake.”

US tariffs on Colombian products rose from 10 percent to 12.5 percent in late July, with a few exceptions including coffee and oil.

Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella said he called President Trump and asked him to suspend tariffs currently targeting the South American nation.
