7 Killed, 2 Trapped As Water, Debris Enter Tunnel In Uttarakhand's Chamoli

"This is a tunnel under construction for a hydropower project. Around 6.30 pm, a significant amount of debris and water surged into the tunnel," district magistrate Gaurav Kumar said

22 people were trapped inside the tunnel and 20 were brought out; of them, six were declared dead, while 14 others have sustained injuries and are undergoing treatment; information about the remaining two workers was not immediately available

A rescue operation is ongoing in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district after water and debris trapped workers in a tunnel at a hydroelectric site. Although 16 workers have been saved, efforts continue. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami emphasises prioritising safe evacuations.

According to information released by the state government, 18 to 19 workers were trapped inside the tunnel around 7 pm. So far, 16 of them have been safely rescued and the operation to bring out the remaining workers is underway.
